The options for replacing missing teeth are:

• Dental Implant
• Bridge
• Denture

If the gap is at the front, accepting the gap is not an option. Generally the best way of replacing a missing tooth is with an implant. These require no preparation to the teeth either side of the gap and have a high long term
success rate. The success rate drops significantly in smokers, by about 15-20%.

There are some patients where placing implants are not appropriate and placing a bridge or denture is the best option, again the specific situation should be discussed with the patient and a decision made based on the pros and cons.

At the back, replacing a tooth may not be necessary. It is quite possible to function with one missing tooth at the back. However there can be negative consequences to leaving a gap; teeth can tilt and move, leading to gum problems, decay or problems with the way you bite together. Also accepting a gap may leave the other teeth open to more stress whilst chewing and biting.
