Hygienist

Brushing technique

Good hygiene is the cornerstone of avoiding dental disease and treatment. The two main causes of tooth loss are decay and gum problems. Keeping bacterial levels low is therefore vital. The dentists and dental hygienists will work together to formulate a regimen that is appropriate for you. Again it is not always necessary to have a clean every 6 months, the interval should be tailored to your particular requirements.

People often ask us what will happen during the hygiene appointment. This will be different for each individual since the hygienist will follow a tailored prescription created by the referring dentist. At the moment patients cannot see the hygienists without a proper prescription by the dentist. If you want to continue to see your own dentist for general check ups but would like to see our hygienists we will need a suitable prescription. The prescription form can be printed out and given to your dentist.

The hygienist will monitor the condition of your gums. They will give you the appropriate oral hygiene advice and instruction as well as dietary advice. They will clean with and ultrasonic scaling device and remove the tartar deposits that you cannot remove yourself with manual scalors. They can give local anaesthetic so that there is no sensitivity associated with the procedure. They can use the prophyflex air abrasion system to gently remove areas of stubborn staining. They will advise regarding the appropriate recall period of attendance along with your dentist.

Alastair Lomax - Dental hygienist

Before entering into the dental field I gained a BSc Hons in Psychology from Dundee University in 2005. In January 2007 I then embarked on the two and half year clinical training course to become a Dental Hygienist/Therapist at the Greater Manchester School for Dental Care Professionals.

Having graduated in March 2009 I then decided to build not only on my clinical practice, working within general practice but also to use my previous experience of research to become a Research Hygienist.

In April 2009 I moved to London to take a position at the Unit of Periodontology, at the Eastman Clinical Investigation Centre based at the Eastman Dental Hospital, London. It is here I work as Research Hygienist on a part-time basis.

I also hold a position at King's College London School of Dental Hygiene and Therapy as a part-time Dental Hygiene/Therapy tutor.

I have worked at Eithicare Dental Centre for almost 1 and half years now but have over 7 years of experience in dentistry.

I Graduated as a Dental Hygienist in 2008 at The DDS School of Dental Hygiene and have since completed many more hours of continued education including Tooth whitening/bleaching and Specialist Radiography.

I am originally from the sunny City of Liverpool and though I spend the majority of my time in London, my love is still with Liverpool F.C but don't let that put you off me!
